The company Lehrgang was a military operation on August 17, 1943 for the quick evacuation of Sicily after the Allies landed in Operation Husky .

The evacuation was carried out by the German and Italian navy via the sea route from Messina to the Italian mainland to Calabria . The German-Italian company was commanded by the German sea captain and knight's cross holder Gustav Freiherr von Liebenstein . A total of 101,569 soldiers were transferred across the Strait of Messina, including 39,569 German and 62,000 Italian soldiers, 4,444 wounded, 9,832 vehicles, 47 tanks, 135 artillery pieces, 2,000 tons of ammunition and fuel and 15,000 tons of other military material. Despite constant Allied air raids, the losses were very small. Only a few smaller vessels were lost. A major reason for this is seen in the strong anti-aircraft security of the crossing area.
