The work operations in German penal institutions are referred to as prison labor systems , or VAW for short .

Task of the penal system is to enable the prisoners to continue to maintain a crime-free life in social responsibility ( rehabilitation ). This statutory enforcement goal is at the same time the goal of the work establishments in the penal institutions. By conveying, maintaining and promoting the skills of prisoners for gainful employment after their release, the penal system makes an important contribution to the rehabilitation of prisoners and improves the prisoners' chances of integration into working life after serving their prison sentence.

Well-trained master craftsmen and journeymen work in the companies of the Compulsory Labor System, who take care of the execution of orders, supervise the detainees and guide them during working hours. Young prisoners also have the right to school and vocational training, meaningful work and training in social skills.

A distinction is made between two operating modes in the VAW.

Own operations

These are state-owned companies in which handicraft products are manufactured that can be purchased by companies, authorities and private customers. The product range includes wood, paper and metal processing as well as the manufacture of baked goods and sausage products. The production includes the production of individual pieces up to series production. In addition, the VAW also maintains utilities for the institutions, which take on, for example, catering, laundry cleaning and cleaning tasks in the detention centers.

Entrepreneurial companies

Entrepreneurial companies act as service providers for the private sector. In these companies, products are manufactured and manufactured with the means (production machines) of independent companies. For example, sorting, packing, assembly or inserting work is carried out here. There are entrepreneurs in almost every correctional facility.

VAW Baden-Württemberg
