content

The widowed Pyotr Petrovich Strishin - a bigot - does not drink and only reads spiritual and moral books. But after he had drunk against his habit at a christening party and came home two o'clock in the morning, he wanted to continue drinking. On quiet feet - the sleeping sister-in-law Daschenka, an old maid, shouldn't notice anything - he sneaks in the dark to the cupboard where he suspects the liquor bottle is in and allows himself one.

It seems to him that he swallowed dynamite instead of vodka. He holds his breath for over a minute. There is a smell of petroleum in the room. It burns in the mouth. Stars twinkle before your eyes. Bells ring in your head.

The apparently poisoned man wakes his housewife Daschenka with: "... I'm dying ... I ... drank petroleum." Daschenka, drunk with sleep, wonders which drink was served to the brother-in-law at the party and asks what the newborn's name was. When Strishin confesses his sin, Daschenka - her head full of curls - jumps out of bed and complains about the waste of expensive fuel for her lamp . Strishin, who is concerned not with money but with his own life, rushes from one doctor to another through the city in the middle of the night, but nothing is opened for him. He's lucky with the pharmacist. When the sleepy pharmacist learns of Strishin's mishap, he fetches one of his specialist books, reads it, pulls out a second book and sends the customer to the doctor after reading it. Strishin goes home. The ringing in the ears is almost unbearable. Strishin fears cardiac arrest . Is the mouth burned? The throat itches.

In a morning conversation with Daschenka, the poisoned man wonders why he is still alive. That is no wonder, replies the maiden. No, "the petroleum is no good!"
