The Upernavik Museum ( Danish Upernavik Museum , Greenlandic Upernaviup Katersugaasivia ) is Upernavik's local museum .

history

The first idea to open a museum in Upernavik came up in 1936, but this was not pursued any further for the time being. With the decolonization of Greenland in 1953, the church of Upernavik, in which the Sysselrat meetings had previously been held, was taken out of use. Anders Lund-Drosvad from Kangersuatsiaq therefore suggested converting the building into a museum. He already had a large archaeological and ethnographic collection that he made available for this purpose. This makes the Upernavik Museum the oldest in Greenland. In 1968 a delegation from the still young State Museum visited the area and the student and later Eskimologist Keld Hansen (* 1938) worked on the collection. Heinrich Larsen later donated a peat wall house to the museum. In 1987, Karsten Rønnow's architectural office was commissioned to integrate the old, decaying, but protected old trading and mission buildings, which had been vacant since 1979, into the museum. During the 1990s, the buildings were extensively restored and in 1997 they were used as a museum building. Since then, the Upernavik Museum has been the northernmost open-air museum in the world.

The following buildings are now part of the open-air museum:

  • B-3 : The old church was the only museum building for a long time. It was built in 1839 and received a church tower in 1882. After the exhibition objects had been lying around there for a long time, the building was returned to its original state with the integration of the other buildings in 1997 and today shows what the Sysselratssaal looked like 70 years ago.
  • B-11 : The cooperage was built in 1848. Today it serves as a residence for invited artists from all over the world who work there and donate their art to the museum.
  • B-12 : The former apartment of the colonial administrator was probably built in 1777 and has been in Upernavik since 1832. Today it is the main building of the museum and is used as an exhibition space, office building and kiosk.
  • B-14 : The old shop was built in 1864 and an extension was added in 1916. Today it also serves as an exhibition area.
  • B-98 : The old pastor's apartment was built in 1866 and is now the seat of the museum director.
  • B-99 : The former school dates from 1911 and the museum's magazine and workshop.
  • BX : The peat wall house was the museum's second building. In contrast to the peat wall houses in other museums in Greenland, it is not a replica.

With the exception of the peat wall house, all buildings are protected. For detailed descriptions of the history and architecture of the individual buildings, see the list of architectural monuments in Upernavik .

A large part of the exhibition goes back to the private collection of Anders Lund-Drosvad. Hunting equipment such as umiaks , kayaks and dog sleds as well as hunting weapons are exhibited. The museum also houses a larger art exhibition by the Danish painter Aage Gitz Johansen (1897–1977), who worked in Greenland, and the Greenlandic sculptor Otto Thomassen (1895–1971). There are also changing special exhibitions.

The Upernavik Museum also offers a genealogy database, which consists of an indexed version of all Upernavik church records, providing genealogical information on all people in Upernavik district from the 18th century to the 1930s.
