Ur Draugr is an Australian extreme and progressive death metal band from Perth that was formed in 2014.

history

The band was formed in 2014. Their cast consists of guitarist Dean Lockhart, drummer Daniel Ryan "Maelstrom" Grainger and singer, guitarist and bassist Drew Griffiths. After the EP The Wretched Ascetic was released in 2015, the debut album With Hunger Undying was released in the same year via Aeternitas Tenebrarum Musicae Fundamentum . The following year, the same label did a split release with Haar .

style

On progarchives.com the music is referred to as a mixture of extreme death and black metal , with influences from Opeth and Enslaved , while Brian Giffin describes it in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal as avant-garde black metal. Christoph von Metal.de wrote in his review of The Wretched Ascetic that it was a mix of Black and Death Metal that had been provided with “tricky but functioning structures”. The singing consists of "brutal roar". Stephan Rajchl from metal1.info said about With Hunger Undying that it contained “an interesting mixture of Death, Black and Doom Metal with some progressive approaches”. Unusual melodies and a unique text concept are processed in the songs, but they are hardly memorable. The growls used would strongly remind of Mikael Åkerfeldt , which would be interrupted by screams typical for Black Metal . However, the singing usually remains incomprehensible. The guitar is mainly played in the tremolo style and has an ominous sound. The Doom Metal passages are mostly melodic, but threatening at the same time.
