Urania leilus is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the Urania butterflies (Uraniidae).
description
The moths reach a wingspan of up to 7 cm. The basic color of the wings is black. They have several blue-green shimmering bands on the forewings. The hind wings are black except for the greenish edge. They are drawn to long tails. Therefore, when it was first described, the butterfly was included in the genus Papilio , which belongs to the knightly butterflies .
distribution
The kind occurs in tropical South America ( Neotropic ) up to the Dominican Republic .
nutrition
The caterpillars feed on the poisonous plants of the genus Omphalea .
