Urban tower

The Urban Tower ( Slovak : Urbanova veža ) served as a bell tower of St. Elisabeth's Cathedral in the city of Košice ( German : Kaschau ).

history

The bell tower was created by rebuilding the originally Gothic tower in the 14th century. In 1628 the tower was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by the master builder Martin Lindtner . In 1775 the pyramid roof was converted into a baroque onion roof . The tower burned down three times and was reconstructed several times.

At the beginning of the 19th century the roof was crowned with an Empire style roof and small shops were added. In the years 1911 to 1912, 1943 to 1944 and in 1947 an arcade was built to the tower . 36 tombstones from the 14th to 17th centuries were placed in the outer wall . In 1966 the tower was damaged by fire and the bells and roof destroyed. The tower was reconstructed from 1967 to 1971. The tower itself has been a listed building since 1963 . Together with St. Elizabeth's Cathedral and Michaels Church , the Urban Tower was declared a national monument of Slovakia in 1970 .

Urban bell

In the tower was the Urban church bell , which had been consecrated to Urban I , the patron saint of winemakers. This five-ton bell was cast in 1557 by the bell caster Franciscus Illenfeld . In 1966 it was destroyed by fire. The original was reconstructed and is now in front of the Urban Tower. In 1996 a copy of the bell was placed in the tower. In 1998 a carillon was installed based on the design of the academic sculptor P. Sceranka.
