Urban Task Force

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Urban Task Force ( UTF for short ) was a working group commissioned by the United Kingdom's Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to develop strategies for the revitalization of urban centers. It was established by the British government in 1998 and ended in 2005. Richard Rogers was chairman .

The Urban Task Force was tasked with “identifying the causes of urban decline in England and making practical suggestions for repopulating cities and urban areas. It should develop a new vision of urban renewal based on excellent design, social well-being and responsible treatment of the environment in an economically and legally viable framework. "

The Urban Task Force summarized its results in a white paper on urban planning and architectural policy . This was published in 1999 in the form of a preliminary final report under the title Towards an urban renaissance . It made 105 recommendations for future urban planning. These recommendations were taken up in 2000 in the government program Our Towns and Cities: The Future - Delivering an Urban Renaissance .

According to Gerd Albers , professor emeritus for urban development and regional planning at the Technical University of Munich , the white paper speaks of “a spirit of optimism (...) in British urban planning” that has not existed “since the beginning of the Thatcher era ”.
