The urethralis muscle (from Latin musculus “muscle”; from Greek ouréthra “urethra”; “urethral muscle ”) is a striated muscle on the urethra ( urethra ). In male mammals, it surrounds the urethra in a circular manner; in females, the muscle arises from the side of the vagina and forms a loop around the urethra. In humans it is divided into the transversus perinei profundus muscle and the actual external urethral sphincter muscle sphincter urethrae membranaceae .

Musculus urethralis acts as a sphincter of urination contrary, that serves the Harnhaltevermögen ( continence ). It is particularly active in phases of increased internal pressure. The muscle also uses rhythmic contractions to transport the sperm during ejaculation .

The innervation is provided by the perineal nerves , which arise from the pudendal nerve .
