Urpeth

Urpeth (Urpeth Grange) is a village in County Durham , England . It is close to Ouston and Beamish, near the Tyne and Wear border . The community population determined in the 2011 census was 3,630.

Urpeth was initially a coal mining area with several coal seams that were mined in various places in the area of ​​the present-day settlement. The Urpeth Colliery was owned by the Birtley Iron Company and employed 300 men and boys in its prime. The on-site coke ovens produced up to 470 tons of coke a day .

Geographically, Urpeth is west of Ouston and is surrounded by fields and rolling hills. There is a hill there that was made from coal from the Ouston and Urpeth mines. The hill offers children the opportunity to toboggan in winter and is also a popular destination for walkers and dog owners all year round.

There are currently two major shops in Urpeth, a newspaper kiosk and The Cherry Tree Pub .

Urpeth was once the site of a controversial landfill . The site was used together with three other sites in Kibblesworth, Ryton and Cowpen Bewley for the disposal of low- level radioactive waste . In the late 1990s, the site was closed.
