Mother tincture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mother tincture (abbreviation: ø) is a term from homeopathy . It is a concentrated, liquid preparation that is obtained either by mixing a vegetable press juice with ethanol , by extracting (extracting) vegetable or animal raw materials or from nosodes .

The extract is produced by the action of an extractant such as ethanol on the starting material. The starting materials can be fresh or dried. The methods used are maceration , digestion (heat treatment), decoction, fermentation or another suitable method prescribed in the pharmacopoeia . As a rule, a certain ratio of raw material and extractant is to be used.

Mother tinctures are used to produce homeopathic medicines by mixing and diluting them (" potentizing ") . Mother tinctures are sometimes used in undiluted form in or as homeopathic medicines.
