Usnisa vijaya dharani
The Usnisa vijaya dharani (Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī) or Usnisa vijaya dharani Sutra ( Chinese 佛頂 尊勝 陀羅尼 經 / 佛顶 尊胜 陀罗尼 经 , Pinyin Foding Zunsheng tuoluoni jing , English Dharani of the Jubilant Corona / Dharani of Buddha-Corona the Triumphant ) is a sutra of esoteric Buddhism . According to Moriz Winternitz, it consists “only of a series of senseless invocations”.
Name and content
The Sutra is an invocation of the "Radiant Buddha-Corona" (Usnisa vijaya, Chinese 尊胜 佛顶 or 佛顶 尊胜, English Jubilant Buddha-Corona / Buddha-Corona the Triumphant). Their powers should be able to prolong life and be able to redeem from the sufferings of samsara . Under Ushnisha (Sanskrit, n. उष्णीष, uṣṇīṣa ) is meant a collection at the apex of the head of the Buddha.
Translations
In addition to the many Tibetan and Chinese translations, there are translations into Khotanese , Uighur , Tangut and Mongolian ( Phagspa script ). It was translated into Chinese in the early Tang Dynasty . The best known translation is that of the Buddhapala from the Tang Dynasty. One of the oldest Sanskrit manuscripts (a palm leaf manuscript ) of the Usnisa vijaya dharani in the Gupta script was discovered in the Horyuji monastery in Japan.
In China, the text can be found on many old Dharani pillars (Chin. Tuoluoni jingchuang ; Eng. Dharani Pillars) from the Tang and Song periods , such as the sutras column of the Ksitigarbha Temple .
