Utagawa Yoshikazu ( Japanese 歌 川 芳 員 ; born in Edo ; active 1850-1870) was a Japanese painter in the ukiyoe style during the late Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period .

life and work

Yoshikazu was born and lived in Edo. He was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and was one of the early and important woodcut artists who dealt with the Yokohama pictures . His subjects were foreigners and foreign customs, but he also created images of landscapes and warriors. He also illustrated books.

Yoshikazu's actual family name is not known. He used his master's family name and often signed as Issen Yoshikazu ( 一 川 芳 員 ).

  2. The designation 佛蘭西 人 ( Furansu-jin ) = French is introduced to 正 寫 ( Seisha ), which means, for example, " realistic illustration".
  3. While the term gaikokujin ( 外国人 ) is mostly used for “foreigner” , here is injin ( 異 人 ), which can be translated as “foreigner”.
  4. The Gankirō ( 岩 亀 楼 ) was an amusement bar for foreigners in Yokohama.
