The 12 teams played two double rounds of 22 games each. In addition, there were 6 additional encounters per team against 3 opponents, which were determined based on a regional division (east, central, west). In total, each team played 50 qualifying games. Then the top eight teams determined the Swiss champions in playoff style. The quarter-finals and semi-finals as well as the final were played according to the best-of-seven mode .
The other four teams determined in the playouts the team that had to play against the champions of the Swiss League to stay in the league.
