The 1st league , the fourth highest ice hockey league in Switzerland, of the 2017/18 season begins in September 2017 and ended in April 2018. A total of 27 teams play across three regional groups. Last year's champion is the HC Sion-Nendaz 4 Vallées .

The 27 teams in the 1st division are divided into three regional groups of 7 or 10 teams. With the exception of the final round, all games take place within these groups.
In groups I (Eastern Switzerland) and III (Suisse Romande) a qualification is played over 27 rounds with 10 teams (each against each three times). The eight best-placed teams are qualified for the play-offs . The teams in ninth and tenth place will play to maintain the league. The two losers are relegated to the 2nd division.
In Group II (Central Switzerland) a qualification is played over 35 rounds with 7 teams (each against each other five times). This equates to 30 games per team. The two best-placed teams after the regular season are directly qualified for the playoff semifinals. The teams in places three to six play in "best-of-three" mode for the other two places in the semi-finals. The championship is over for the team in seventh place.
The play-offs, with the exception of the quarter-finals in Central Switzerland, will be played as a "best-of-five" series, with the winner of the play-off final qualifying for the finals of the Swiss amateur championship.

Final round
Games
In the final round, the three group winners competed against each other. After a group stage (six games), the two best teams played in the final for champions of the first division. Since the EHC Wetzikon and the EHC Zuchwil-Regio waived promotion to the MySports League , HC Sierre was already established as a promoted player before the final round.

SC Weinfelden and HC Monthey-Chablais are relegated to the 2nd division.
Withdrawal of the EHC Zuchwil Regio
After the formation of the MySports League, the Swiss Regio League decided to hold the 1st league in two groups from the 2018/19 season. The loser of this change of mode was the EHC Zuchwil Regio , which was divided into the eastern group. The Zuchwil lost the attractive opponents from Burgdorf, Unterseen and Adelboden. Instead, they faced duels against teams like Arosa, Rheintal or Bellinzona. Home games against these teams were an economic handicap as it was feared that there would be few away fans at these games. These games were also unattractive for the regional sponsors. From a logistical point of view, it was difficult for the amateurs from Zuchwil to organize away games in Bündernerland or Ticino. The EHC Zuchwil Regio therefore applied for a voluntary relegation to the 2nd division. However, this was rejected by the Swiss Ice Hockey Association. The Solothurn team therefore had to start over in the 4th division in the 2019/20 season.
