Utah State Route 9 in Springdale

The Utah State Route 9 - also known as Zion Park Scenic Byway known - is a highway in Utah . Utah State Route 9 begins at Exit 16 of Interstate I-15 in Washington and ends at Mount Carmel Junction on US Highway 89 . Over a length of around 91 km it initially runs east in the valley of the Virgin River and enters the Zion National Park in the valley of the West Fork Virgin River north of Springdale . After crossing the Zion-Mount-Carmel Tunnel , it runs between Clear Creek Mountain and the White Cliffs as the Zion-Mount-Carmel Highway to the east, where it ends in Mount Carmel Junction in the valley of the East Fork Virgin River.

The route in Zion National Park with tunnels, ramps, embankments and bends is considered an engineering masterpiece of its time. This section of the route is subject to restrictions with regard to the weight and dimensions of the vehicles used. Motorhomes that exceed the clearance dimensions of the lanes can be driven in the middle of the street after prior notification and for a fee; the passage through the tunnel is temporarily blocked in both directions. Cyclists are not allowed to drive on the section, a shuttle service can be organized if necessary.
