The Virgin River is a 322 km long right tributary of the Colorado River in the US states of Utah , Arizona and Nevada .
course
Its two headwaters East Fork Virgin (50 miles) and North Fork Virgin (40 miles) arise in Kane County of southwestern Utah on the watershed to the Great Basin . The spring arms still flow separately through Zion National Park and unite south of it at Springdale in Washington County . There they form the Virgin River.
The river cuts in a southwestern direction in the Arizona Strip through the northwestern part of Arizona, the Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness , then later the Virgin Mountains . At Mesquite , the river reaches Nevada. Its former lower course was dammed for around 50 km and forms the northern arm of Lake Mead . Today it flows into the reservoir about 40 miles east of Las Vegas .
The headwaters were designated as a National Wild and Scenic River in 2009 as the first river in Utah . This is associated with protection against construction . Since the end of 2010, the Zion National Park has been coordinating a program on future nature conservation measures and dealing with recreational use. A report with possible management alternatives was presented in the summer of 2013, and at the beginning of 2014 the National Park Service decided to manage the catchment area of the Virgin River in the park primarily from the point of view of the protection of natural resources and to allow tourist uses where they are nature conservation do not endanger.
