The Virgin Mountains are a small mountain range in the border area between the greater Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range in the southeastern part of the US state of Nevada and northwestern Arizona . The mountain range runs on the left bank of the Virgin River to its mouth in Lake Mead with a length of about 60 km from northeast to southwest. With a maximum width of 13 km, it covers an area of about 300 square kilometers. The highest peaks are Virgin Peak with 2,461 meters and Mount Bangs with 2,442 meters above sea level. The closest location is Mesquite , Nevada.

Most of the range is federally owned and under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (91.6%). In the northeast, parts of the mountain range north of Mount Bangs belong to the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument nature reserve under the administration of the BLM and to the Paiute Wilderness , a wilderness area and thus the strictest class of protected areas in the USA. The Virgin Mountains are characterized by an arid climate and the vegetation is thin. Wildlife includes large numbers of lizard species as well as the spotted rattlesnake and Arizona snake .
