She has been working at the German National Library in Frankfurt since 1980. In 1999 she was appointed director of the Frankfurt House of the German National Library. In this function she is also the permanent representative of the General Director.

Ute Schwens set up the “Digital Services” department at the German National Library in Frankfurt. For the National Library, it is significantly involved in the establishment and operation of the German Digital Library and takes part in all committee meetings in an advisory capacity.

On November 7, 2016, the German National Library changed the user regulations under the motto “digital instead of printed”. Since then, the digital version has been given preference over the printed version in making a work available to readers. In an interview, Schwens took the view that online versions could completely replace printed books and were also superior to them. When the library's user survey in November 2016 came to the conclusion that 82.7% of readers preferred printed editions and only 7.1% preferred digital editions, the library reverted to unrestricted online ordering of printed works.
