Uwe Johnson Society
The Uwe Johnson Society is a literary society based in Rostock . She writes her name in the same way that Uwe Johnson writes something comparable in his texts, i.e. without a hyphen between first names and surnames.
Foundation and goals
The society was founded on February 26, 2010 on the initiative of the Germanist Holger Helbig and the entrepreneur Ulrich Fries as a non-profit organization. The society wants to promote the preoccupation with the life and work of the writer Uwe Johnson . She wants to help preserve and deepen his knowledge of his novels and writings and bring Johnson's literary legacy to bear in cultural life.
This is done in particular through the publication of the Johnson yearbook as well as scientific and literary events. In particular, an edition of the poet's work is planned . The society would also like to enrich the cultural life of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and above all contribute to Rostock's importance as a city of literature.
Supported by the University of Rostock , in particular by the Uwe Johnson endowed professorship established there and its owner Holger Helbig, the society works closely with the Suhrkamp Verlag and the German Literature Archive Marbach . Ulrich Fries, Holger Helbig and Andreas Tesche have been members of the board since 2010.
From May 27th to 30th, 2010 an international conference on the subject of the author's identity took place in the Rostock town hall . Uwe Johnson. Work and life took place with Johnson experts and readers from England, the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany, during which the association's first general meeting was held. The establishment of the company was welcomed by numerous regional and national media.
The 3rd international doctoral workshop of the Uwe Johnson Society in Rostock from June 17-19, 2015 on the subject of trust in the curiosity of the reader was also followed by a workshop in Rostock with students and doctoral students from Waseda University Tokyo on identity and language. Studies on the canon of the present on June 22, 2015.
Martin Reimer was managing director of the company from its founding until the end of 2015, followed by Uva Piterane in 2016. She had studied German and worked on the Uwe Johnson edition before becoming a managing director.
Johnson yearbook
With the 2010 vintage, the Johnson yearbook will be sponsored by the Uwe Johnson Society and will be published on their behalf by Wallstein Verlag . The yearbook was founded in 1994 by Ulrich Fries and Holger Helbig. It reflects the current status of international Johnson research. It has been co-edited by Irmgard Müller since 2001, and Michael Hofmann took over the editing in 2004 . The Johnson yearbook has been published by Bernd Auerochs, Ulrich Fries, Holger Helbig and Katja Leuchtenberger since autumn 2010. The yearbooks, which usually have around 300 pages, contain articles in the categories "Johnsoniana", literary "Essays" and "Criticism" as well as "Society" with reports from the Uwe Johnson Society.
