Uwe an der Heiden (born December 24, 1942 in Marburg an der Lahn ) is a German mathematician and philosopher and has been a professor of mathematics and theory of complex systems at the University of Witten / Herdecke since 1987 . His areas of expertise are nonlinear dynamic systems , differential equations , brain research , epistemology , philosophy of meaning.

Career

Uwe an der Heiden studied philosophy and mathematics (minor in theoretical physics) at the universities of Cologne and Göttingen after attending the Goethe-Gymnasium in Kassel and two years in the armed forces . In 1972 he received his doctorate. rer. nat. at the University of Göttingen. From 1972 to 1979 he was a scientific assistant at the chair for biomathematics (Prof. Karl-Peter Hadeler) at the University of Tübingen and completed his habilitation in theoretical biology in 1979 with the thesis Analysis of Neural Network , which deals with mathematical models of nerve networks. From 1980 to 1985 he was a private lecturer and 1986 professor for theoretical biology at the University of Bremen. Since 1987 he has held the chair for mathematics and theory of complex systems at the University of Witten / Herdecke . His publications include work in the field of mathematics on mathematical models of the nervous system, the endocrine system, the immune system, nonlinear differential equations, chaos theory and work in the field of philosophy on the problem of free will, the problem of the ego constitution, the problem of the relationship between the brain and consciousness Acting in complex systems as well as developing a "philosophy of meaning".

He teaches in the faculties of cultural reflection - fundamental studies, economics and medicine. An der Heiden is a founding member and member of the scientific directorate of the German-Japanese Society for Integrative Science . He was and is a member of the editorial board of Neural Networks , Acta Biotheoretica , Journal of Mathematical Biology , Systems , Chaos and Complexity . He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
