Václav Votruba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Václav Votruba (born December 19, 1909 in Slavětín nad Ohří , † September 11, 1990 in Prague ) was a Czech theoretical physicist . He is considered to be the founder of modern theoretical physics in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War and was a school educator there.

Life

Votruba studied mathematics and physics at the Charles University in Prague from 1928 to 1933 and was then assistant to F. Záviska. After the closure of the Czech universities during the German occupation, he worked as a high school teacher and also as a simple worker in tunnel construction. Towards the end of the war he gave lectures with exceptional regulations after his teacher Zaviska had died. In 1945 he received his doctorate and in 1946/47 he was in Zurich with Wolfgang Pauli and Gregor Wentzel , where he solved the problem of photo production from electron-positron pairs in quantum electrodynamics. He was professor for theoretical physics at the Charles University and dealt in particular with elementary particle physics.

When the Nuclear Research Center Dubna was founded in 1956, he was one of the two vice directors.

He published the books Theory of Electromagnetic Fields ( Teorie electromagnetického pole , 1955 with C. Muzikář) and Fundamentals of the special theory of relativity ( Základy speciální teorie relativity , 1969). From 1960 to 1962 he was the main editor of the journal Československý časopisu pro fyziku and its English-language edition Czechoslovak Journal of Physics .

The Doppler Institute for Mathematical Physics at the Charles University in Prague awards the Vaclav Votruba Prize for outstanding dissertations in theoretical physics in his honor.
