V533 Herculis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

V533 Herculis was a nova that lit up in Hercules in 1963 and reached a brightness of 3 mag . It was discovered by the American astronomer Leslie Copus Peltier on February 6, 1963. So far, it is the only nova that has been shown to increase its apparent brightness before the eruption. On photo plates (e.g. from the archive of the Sonneberg observatory ) it could be determined that the brightness of the white dwarf between 1930 and 1961 averaged 14.7 mag. In the 1.5 years before the eruption, however, it suddenly increased until it was at 13.3 mag. So far there is no explanation for this phenomenon.
