history

The vat 69

In the late 19th century, William Sanderson decided to produce a blended Scotch whiskey. William Sanderson and his son put together over a hundred different blends. Then the samples were tasted by some experienced blinding masters and friends. The testers then selected the barrel they thought was the best. The majority of the testers opted for the vat ( vat ) with the number 69, from which the name of the new blend was derived.

William Sanderson

William Sanderson was born in Leith in 1839. At the age of 13 he started an apprenticeship with a wine and spirits manufacturer. As early as 1863 he had his own business and produced his own liqueurs and whiskey blends.

In 1880 his son William Mark Sanderson also joined the company. He managed to convince his father to fill the various blends in bottles. Sanderson bottled the liquors he produced , but had previously refused to fill the blends. This made the Sandersons one of the first to sell bottled whiskey.

In the early 1930s, Sanderson's company was taken over by the gin manufacturer Booth's, which in turn joined the DCL Group (Distillers Company) after 1935, which merged with Arthur Bell & Sons to form United Distillers in 1987 . In 1980 the Vat 69 Reserve was brought out of the Sanderson House.

Antarctic expedition

In the years 1914 and 1921, the Vat 69 was taken with Ernest Henry Shackleton on his expeditions.

In the movie

In the Band of Brothers miniseries about World War II, Vat 69 was Lewis Nixon's (played by Ron Livingston ) favorite drink .

This mark appears in many of Scorsese's gangster films , such as Good Fellas .

Gunther Philipp also drinks a VAT 69 in the 1961 feature film Mariandl .
