history

VR would like to improve the profitability at marshalling yards, in freight terminals and on non-electrified routes, which make up 45 percent of the Finnish route network. To this end, a contract was signed with Stadler Rail for the delivery of 60 diesel-electric locomotives worth around 200 million euros. This contract also includes an option for maintenance by the manufacturer.

The locomotives with a central driver's cab can be used for freight and passenger trains in single or multiple units with up to three locomotives. In addition, they should be used in shunting services.

The first five locomotives are to be handed over to operations in 2022, the others to be delivered by the end of 2025. They comply with current standards in terms of their exhaust emissions, their energy efficiency and safety standards.

They are equipped with radio remote control , ETCS Baseline 3 with local STM-ATP security system and a vehicle control system that includes remote diagnostic elements . The AC drive system has one inverter per axis.

The locomotives have a maximum starting tractive effort of 346 kN and are built in such a way that they can be used at temperatures as low as −40 ° C.

This is intended to replace older vehicles from the 1960s to 1980s.
