The VR class L1 was a Finnish shunting locomotive .
history
The L1 series was the first locomotive of the Finnish state railway Valtionrautatiet specially designed for shunting .
Six of the locomotives stayed in Russia after 1918 . In 1928 four machines came back from Russia.
With the exception of ten examples, which were built by Hanomag between 1921 and 1923, all of the locomotives were built at Tampella in Tampere .
VR series Vr1
In October 1942 the VR introduced a new designation system. There the locomotives previously designated as L1 were sorted into the new Vr1 series .
Technical
The Vr1 was equipped with a Heusinger control and piston valves. The Vr1 series was powerful and was used in depots across Finland until 1970.
There were locomotives that were set up for coal firing and those that were set up for wood firing. The wood-fired locomotives had the typical widened chimney with the spark arrester.
