Two Sm4s in Helsinki Central Station

The Sm4 series are electric multiple units of the Finnish State Railways VR . They were developed by Fiat's rail division , but manufactured in Spain by the wagon builder Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles ( CAF ) .

One unit consists of two closely coupled, identically constructed bogie cars. The floor of the car is lowered between the bogies; the entry areas are also located in this area. This means that the railcars are barrier-free. The wheel sets of the bogies at the short coupling end are driven.

The first ten units were delivered in 1999 and used in local rail transport in the Helsinki region. On June 25, 2002, VR announced that it had ordered another 20 units. These were delivered between April 2004 and February 2005. The main routes run from Helsinki to Riihimäki and Karis . The area of application can also extend to Tampere .

Up to the commissioning of the Sm5 , these railcars were the only ones that could be used on Line Y, as only they could achieve the required speed on the new Kerava – Lahti line.
