The JKOY Sm5 series are four-part Finnish electric multiple units for local and regional transport.

They are owned by the company Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto ("Junakalusto Oy" = JKOY for short) and are used in local rail transport in the Helsinki region. The trains were developed by Stadler Rail and are part of the Flirt family . The original order of 32 vehicles was increased by a further nine to 41 vehicles in 2011 and a further 40 to 81 vehicles in 2014. The first train entered service in 2009. On August 18, 2017, Stadler handed over the last of 81 FLIRTs ordered from 2006 to the customer Junakalusto Oy at the VR Ilmala depot in Helsinki.

history

The customer and owner of the trains is Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto (JKOY), founded in 2004, a joint venture between the cities of Helsinki , Espoo , Vantaa , Kauniainen and the Finnish state railway VR (cities 65%, VR 35%). JKOY leases the trains to the transport authority of the Helsinki S-Bahn, Verkehrsverbund Helsingin seudun liikenne (HSL), which is responsible for planning local public transport in the region.

For practical operation, HSL passes the trains on to a railway company. At least until the end of 2017 this will be VR. Should rail passenger transport in Finland be opened to competition as planned, the operator could then change.

The rollout of the first vehicle took place on October 7, 2008 at Stadler in Bussnang . The first two vehicles were extensively tested in Finland in 2009. Series delivery of the remaining vehicles only began after the trials.

Because of the extra-wide car bodies and broad gauge, the vehicles are transported by road to Lübeck and loaded onto a ship there.

technical features

It is a four-part railcar, the end bogies of which are driven, while the running bogies, as Jakobs bogies, are located between the car parts. All bogies are air-sprung. The car bodies are made of extruded aluminum profiles and the two driver's cabs are made of GRP.

The propulsion equipment is redundant. The four drive lines with the water-cooled IGBT converters can be switched off individually.

According to the wider Finnish boundary profile , the car body width is 3.2 meters. The vehicle has improved thermal insulation to be suitable for winter use down to −40 °, including the triple-glazed windows. The air conditioning system was equipped with a heat recovery system in order to be able to preheat the cold fresh air with the exhaust air in winter. The entrance areas are provided with additional fan heaters and floor heating.

Disabled-accessible toilets have been built in. This car contains the multifunctional room for prams, bicycles and wheelchairs. For wheelchair users there is an additional parking space in the seating area in each railcar.

An information system with 11 screens is built in, and there is an SOS intercom (6 in total) in each entrance area. The railcar can be monitored via built-in video cameras.

The 260 seats are arranged in 2 + 3 seating. 80% of the passenger space is in the low-floor area.
