Helsingin seudun liikenne ( Swedish Helsingforsregionens trafik , official abbreviations HSL / HRT), literally translated as “Transport of the Helsinki region”, is the transport association for the Helsinki region . He is responsible for the organization of local public transport in the region.

The traffic is carried out with the metro , local rail transport , tram , buses and ferries. HSL is responsible for the general planning of the traffic system and the tariff structure, for passenger information, marketing and ticket controls. In contrast, HSL is not the owner or operator of the specific means of transport, but orders this service - partly in the tendering process - from other companies, such as the Helsinki City Transport Authority (HKL) and the Finnish Railways .

In 2015, HSL carried 358.6 million passengers, of which 182.0 million were on buses, 62.9 million on the underground, 56.5 million on the train, 55.2 on the tram and 1.9 million. by ferry to Suomenlinna . The fleet of companies working for HSL comprised 1,366 buses, 54 underground cars, 124 trams, 114 multiple units and 4 ferries.

The transport association was founded on January 1st, 2010. When it was founded, the following cities and municipalities belonged to it: Helsinki , Espoo , Vantaa , Kauniainen , Kerava and Kirkkonummi . On January 1, 2012, Sipoo was added. The other municipalities in the region ( Järvenpää , Nurmijärvi , Tuusula , Mäntsälä , Pornainen , Hyvinkää and Vihti ) can also join the network in the future.

A new ticket and information system has been introduced since summer 2016. a. new ticket machines and a new division of the HSL network into zones.

Tickets

The range of tickets in the Helsinki region differs somewhat from the usual systems in other large cities. The current tariff system largely dates from the time before HSL was founded, when each municipality was responsible for organizing local public transport. A new tariff system was introduced in 2014.

Locals pay almost exclusively with the green travel card (matkakortti) when they approach machines that are located in every means of transport. It is not necessary to hold the card at the machine yourself; it is sufficient to bring the handbag in which the card is located close to the device.

Single tickets

Single tickets can be bought from machines, kiosks and cell phones. Helsinki-internal tickets cost € 2.70 at ticket machines and are valid for 60 minutes from purchase on all buses, metro , regional trains and trams in the Helsinki metropolitan area. You can change trains as often as you like. For some bus lines that feed regional trains and the underground, the period of validity is 80 minutes. In addition, the ferry to the fortress island of Suomenlinna can be used with a single ticket .

The tram ticket is a special form of the single ticket. It is slightly cheaper at 2.50 euros, but only entitles you to use the tram lines. Another special form is the Suomenlinna card. It costs 5.00 euros and is valid for twelve hours only on the ferries to Suomenlinna.

Single tickets are available on buses, local trains or trams with a surcharge of 3.20 euros. Separate tariffs apply for trips outside Helsinki.

Travel Cards

Electronic “Travel Cards” have existed since 2001, which can be topped up in advance either with “Value” or “Time”. As part of the new ticket and information system, the Travel Cards will be exchanged for new HSL Cards from 2017 .

If you load "value", i. H. a certain amount of money, you have to hold the card in front of a reader when boarding and select the desired ticket type at the push of a button. This saves buying tickets with cash from the driver; In addition, the tariffs are cheaper: a Helsinki-internal single ticket purchased with a Travel Card costs 2.06 euros and a tram ticket costs 1.55 euros.

If you load “Zeit”, you can use all means of transport for a freely selectable period of time (14–366 days) without restriction. 14 days cost 27.50 euros, each additional day costs 1.50 euros or 1.60 euros (Helsinki-internal). There is also the purchase fee for the Travel Card (5.00 euros). The above prices apply to personal (non-transferable) Travel Cards from residents of the HSL area plus the municipalities of Hanko , Hausjärvi , Hyvinkää , Ingå / Inkoo , Järvenpää , Karkkila , Lohja , Mäntsälä , Nurmijärvi , Pornainen , Porvoo , Pukkila , Raseborg / Raasepori , Siuntio , Tuusula and Vihti . Transferable Travel Cards are available for residents of other communities and tourists. These cost EUR 66.40 for 14 days and EUR 3.70 or EUR 3.80 for each additional day. The Travel Cards can be loaded with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 400 euros.

With this travel card you can even travel from Helsinki city center to Vuosaari harbor (approx. 20 km) and change from the subway to the bus to catch the ferry (as of April 2010 only with Finnlines ) in 27–28 hours to travel back to Germany ( Rostock or Travemünde ).

Payment machines have three or four selectable fields, as zones 0 and L are mutually exclusive. In some locations or in some means of transport, these two zones are completely absent. In buses and trams, as well as on the S-Bahn, the machines are located in the means of transport itself; when using the underground, you have to validate your ticket when stepping on the platform.

The payment zones of the machines for Travel Cards are structured as follows:
