The Finnish State Railways VR procured a total of 50 electric multiple units of the Sm1 series from 1969 to 1973 . The mechanical part comes from Valmet in Tampere and the electrical part from Strömberg in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki. They were in use in the Helsinki area until 2016 .

Technical details

The multiple units ran as a unit consisting of an Sm1 motor car and a control car from the Eio series. Both vehicles had 90 seats each. All four axles of the railcar were each driven by a Stromberg GHAU / H 7226 shaft current motor, giving the railcar an hourly output of 860 kW. The maximum acceleration was 0.8 m / s².

commitment

The Sm1 multiple units were procured for local rail transport in the Helsinki region . The suburban line Helsinki – Kirkkonummi was the first electrified line of the VR to go into operation on January 26, 1969 with five Sm1s.

The advancing electrification made it necessary to procure additional railcars. The Sm2 series looks very similar to the Sm1.

The Sm1 class was replaced by the Sm4 class trains delivered between 1998 and 2005 and the Sm5 class trains delivered by Stadler from 2009 onwards . As of December 2015, only six Sm1 multiple units were in commercial use. The last trains were taken out of service in April 2016.

The scrapping of 14 retired multiple units began at the end of February 2019 in the Hyvinkää workshop .

The multiple unit Sm1 6001/6201 is in the Ilmala depot and is to be included in the Finnish Railway Museum.
