Vailoa ( Vailoa i Palauli ) is a village on the island of Savai'i in Samoa . Vailoa is the capital of the political district (itūmālō) Palauli on the southeast coast of the island.

geography

The place is located on the south coast of the island, in the center of Palauli Bay, right next to the main town Palauli . The landscape rises gradually from the coast, in the hinterland are the Afu Aau Waterfalls ( ). The archaeologically significant Pulemelei Mound is about 2 km inland . In 2019 one of the first hydropower plants on Samoa was opened in Vailoa.

history

Vailoa received the status of Pule (traditional political power base) in the 19th century. The village is associated with the chief title Lilomaiava .

As in many villages in Samoa, the economy consists mainly of subsistence farming and fishing.

Compensation claims

In the past few years some village chiefs have made claims in relation to lands that had already been illegally sold during the German colonial rule . The dispute dates back to 1886 when customary land was sold to the family of Olaf Frederick Nelson . The village elders claim that this land was never rightfully sold. In 2008, the Samoa Court of Appeal dismissed the lawsuit for the second time.

The disputed land includes the Nelson Plantation , where large prehistoric remains have been found, and Pulemelei Mound.
