geography

The Palauli District in Samoa.

The district is mainly populated on the coast. The South Coast Road also runs there . In the interior of the country there are tracts of land shaped by earlier volcanic activity, including the rugged Alia o le Gaoa . From the volcanoes that stretch like a chain across the center of the island, only to find Mount Mafane ( 909  m ), Mount SIOPE ( 1813  m ) and Mount Afi ( 1563  m ) in the area. On the coast, lava flows have created special volcanic formations. The Alofaaga Blowholes (Taga Blowholes) on the coast near Taga and the Nuu Black Sand Beach ( ) are tourist attractions. The Tafua Peninsula on the southeast edge of the district with Mount Tafua Savaiʻi ( 170  m ) and the Tafua Rainforest Preserve is also of volcanic origin. There the district borders on the Faʻasaleleaga district . The Cape Paepaeoleʻia ( ) represents the southernmost point of the island Savaiʻi.

More recently, the inland village of Sili has opposed a government hydropower project because of environmental and cultural concerns.

tradition

The highest ranking Matai (chief title) in the district is Lilomaiava , who is based in Vailoa. For the choice, the local community of Vailoa must also consult the village of Safotu in the Gagaʻifomauga district . Safotu is the northern community involved in awarding the Lilomaiava title. The title came to the island of Upolu as the name of Malietoa Lilomaiava , as it was given as a name of honor after Lilomaiava had defeated the monarchy of the Tuʻi Tonga in a game bet. Malietoa means "strength" and "courage" in the Tongan language .

archeology

Extensive prehistoric settlements are suspected around Pulemelei Mound and archaeological mapping has been carried out.
