Gagaʻifomauga is a political district (itūmālō; electoral district) of Samoa , on the island of Savaiʻi . The district is located on the north coast of the island and had 4,770 inhabitants at the 2001 population census.
geography
The Gagaʻifomauga district includes the village communities Aʻopo , Lefagaoaliʻi , Manase , Safune , Safotu , Samauga and Sasina . The main town was traditionally A'opo. Manase, Safotu, Sasina and Safune are on the coast. Samauga lies on a rocky promontory between Safotu and Safune and the settlement A'opo inland.
The village of Manase is a popular tourist destination with popular beach fale overnight stays. There is a hospital in Safotu.
The coastal road connects the villages. To the west, the road turns inland to the village of Sasina. At A'opo there are protected areas around Mount Silisili ( 1858 m ⊙ ), the highest peak in Samoa. Other peaks are Mata o le Afi ( 1640 m ⊙ ) and Mount Mu ( 1620 m ⊙ ).
tradition
The Safune area was the location for the 1926 film Moana , one of Robert J. Flaherty's earliest documentaries . The spring basin Mata o le Alelo in the village of Matavai in Safune is associated with the legend of Sina and the eel (Sina ma le Tuna). A leader of the independence movement in the early 19th century, Olaf Frederick Nelson was born in Safune.
In prehistoric times Safotu was settled by chiefs from Tonga .

Gagaʻifomauga is divided into three electoral constituencies:
- Gagaʻifomauga No. 1 ( Safotu , Manase )
- Gagaʻifomauga No. 2 ( Samauga , Lefagaoaliʻi ; Faletagaloa ( Safune ) and the villages of Paia , Saletele , Lolua , Siʻufaga and Matavai )
- Gagaʻifomauga No. 3 ( Aʻopo , Sasina and the villages of Fagaeʻe and Letui )
