Vaisigano is a political district (itūmālō; electoral district) of Samoa on the western tip of the island of Savaiʻi . The main town of the district is Asau in the northeast corner of the district. In 2001 there were 6,643 inhabitants.

The area is also known as Itu Asau in Samoan .

geography

The district extends from the western tip of Samoa, from Cape Mulinuu along the north coast via Cape Puava and Asau Bay to the Asau settlement border. There the border to the adjoining districts of Gagaʻifomauga and Satupaʻitea runs to the south. The settlements of Falelima , Neiafu and Tufutafoe are on the south coast . The district is also home to the village of Vaisala , whose chief ( Matai ) Va'ai Kolone , twice Prime Minister of Samoa in the 1980s. Kolone also founded the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), which is currently in power.

At the village of Auala on the north coast there is a sanctuary with a turtle breeding area and a rainforest sanctuary at Falealupo ( Falealupo Rainforest Conservation ) at the west end of the island.
