Neiafu is a village on the island of Savaiʻi in Samoa . Politically, the place belongs to the Alataua Sisifo electoral district in the Vaisigano district and is located on the southwestern tip of the island. In 2006, Neiafu Uta had 598 residents and Neiafu Tai had 313 residents.

geography

Like many villages in Samoa, Neiafu consists of two settlements: Neiafu Tai on the coast and Neiafu Uta inland. Neiafu Tai on the coast is between Tufutafoe and Falelima , where the coastal road runs, which turns north to Falealupo -uta after Neiafu . To the north of the village are the hills Mount Talie and Mount Fatu o Sina . The older part of the settlement is by the sea, but with the construction of the modern Island Road some families moved a few kilometers inland. The village population has close family ties with Satupaʻitea .

Neiafu-Tai is famous because the last warriors of Tonga boarded their ships there and left Samoa at the end of Tongan rule. On their departure the Tu'i Tonga said : "Mālie toa, mālie tau" - "brave men, fought bravely". The family of the Samoan chiefs Malietoa thus got their name.
