The Valencia Firebats (founded as Valencia Bats ) are an American football team from Valencia , Spain .

Club history

After the 1992/1993 season of the Spanish Football League, the Giants de Cullera team split. As a result of this split, the Valencia Bats were founded in April 1993. They were invited to the 1993/1994 season of the newly founded American Football League and finished in 5th place. In the 1994/1995 season they were a founding member of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano and barely failed to qualify for the play-offs. The elevation of the association to eligible "elite" status during the 1996/1997 season by the Valencian regional government was a first sense of achievement. In addition, this season Bill Bannantine replaced Elliott Klein as head coach of the Bats.

In the following 1997/1998 season, The Bats made it into the play-offs and failed there in the semi-finals at the L'Hospitalet Pioners , finishing third in the league and thus for the EFAF Cup and thus for the first time for one international competition qualified. However, they were unable to take part in the following season due to financial constraints.

In the 2000/2001 season, import players were brought to Valencia for the first time, which meant that the play-offs could be reached again and the semi-finals were lost again. The renewed qualification for the EFAF Cup was exploited in the next season and brought the first international game against the Roma Marines . But the team failed in the preliminary round.

In the 2005/2006 season, the team, renamed Firebats , became the dominant team in the Spanish league . From 2006 to 2010 they were five times in a row in the final of the Spanish championship, which they won in 2006, 2007 and 2009. In addition, they were able to reach the play-offs for the first time in the 2010 season , after three unsuccessful attempts in 2007 , 2008 and 2009 in the European Football League . However , they clearly had to admit defeat to the defending champion Swarco Raiders Tirol with 55:13.

Between 2014 and 2016, the Firebats were able to build on their great successes again. In all three years they reached the play-off final and were able to secure their fourth Spanish championship in the 2015 season.
