The Valmet M76 is a Finnish assault rifle .
development
As early as the 1950s, the Finnish manufacturer Valmet developed an assault rifle based on the model of the Soviet AK-47, the Valmet M62 ( Rynnäkkökivääri 62) . In the mid-1970s, the Finns then introduced the lock housing in sheet metal design like the AKM under the designation M76 ( Rynnäkkökivääri 62 76) . The M76 was specially developed for the export market and is characterized by the fact that it can be designed to meet almost any customer requirement.
technology
While the M62 was still designed for the purely Finnish market, numerous changes were made to the M76. In contrast to the AK-47, the Finns used plastic instead of wood, which significantly reduced the weight. While the trigger on the M62 was still vertical, which had the advantage of using thick gloves, the M76 was equipped with a conventional trigger. This prevented a shot from being accidentally released in the undergrowth. Nevertheless, it was designed so that the trigger guard could be removed. This also ensured the use of thick mittens here. The weapon is still used by the Finnish armed forces today.
