Fokofpolisiekar is a South African punk rock band from Bellville in the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality that sings its lyrics in Afrikaans .

history

Development and establishment in the first few years

Fokofpolisiekar (German for "Verpiss dich, Polizeiauto") was founded in April 2003. In the same year the band released their first EP with As Jy Met Vuur Speel Sal Jy Brand (for example: "If you play with fire, you will burn") and a year later with Lugsteuring (for example: "Atmospheric disturbance") their first CD that was able to come up with a better production compared to its predecessor. The band's popularity grew rapidly in their homeland, where Afrikaans lost considerable ground to English after the end of apartheid . The hard and fast style and the critical texts, which respond to typical South African circumstances such as the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa , which is strongly anchored in the conservative Boers , were a special characteristic among the protagonists of Afrikaans Rock, which previously had names like Johannes Kerkorrel and Koos Kombuis knew who had already expressed themselves critically during the apartheid period, but which can be attributed to a less harsh musical style. Thanks to her anti-religious attitude and various incidents, Fokofpolisekar received ongoing media attention and radio presence, also thanks to protests from church circles.

In 2005 the EP Monoloog In Stereo was released , which sold 28,000 times within a year. For the most part, the band moved away from punk to a quieter and slower style. In March 2006 Fokofpolisiekar played at the Coca-Cola Colab Massive Mix Festival in the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town , where international musicians such as Metallica and Fatboy Slim also performed. In the same year an album followed with Swanesang (" Schwanengesang "), which brought together the punk of the first two releases and the quieter style of Monoloog In Stereo . It is the band's most elaborately arranged album to date, and some tracks are accompanied by Electro Muse , a string quartet made up exclusively of women that also follows a punk attitude. While the band had already played in London in October 2005 , where a large number of Afrikaans-speaking South Africans live, they made a tour in November 2006 as part of the publication of Swanesang , this time taking them to London, the Netherlands and Flanders , where Afrikaans due to its similarity to Dutch can be understood. As the band stated on their tour diary, due to their low level of awareness in the Netherlands and Flanders, they sometimes had to play there in front of a small number of spectators, even though the Dutch daily de Volkskrant had portrayed the band in detail on their blog.

Foundation of the side projects and return in the meantime

In 2007, Fokofpolisiekar was largely on hold, the members devoted themselves to solo projects. Van Coke and Myburgh founded Van Coke Kartel with Justin Kruger on drums and released their self-titled debut album in November 2007, which, in contrast to the lavishly produced and arranged Fokofpolisiekar album Swanesang, was intentionally more straightforward. Hunter Kennedy and Jaco Venter turn founded together with the musicians Laudo Liebenberg and Hennie van Halen aKing whose English-language debut album Dutch Courage in February 2008 appeared. De Ridder turned to commissioned compositions and productions and, together with other people from the music business, runs the production company "Soft Light City".

In 2008 another EP was released with Antibiotika , which stylistically linked to the earlier punk rock times. It contains an additional DVD with videos of the band. Afterwards, the band members returned to their own projects, aKing and Van Coke Kartel released successors to their respective debuts (aKing 2009 and 2011, Van Coke Kartel 2008, 2010 and 2011). This did not mean the shutdown of Fokofpolisiekar, which continued to perform live.

After four years without a new release, Fokofpolisiekar returned on the album Van Fok King Tasties in 2012 , this is, as the name suggests, a joint release ( split ) by Fokofpolisiekar and the bands that emerged from it, i.e. aKing, Van Coke Kartel and The Heuwels Fantasties. Each of these bands recorded three tracks for the album, two of which are acoustic versions of songs that have already been released, while the third is a new composition.

The following year, Forgive Them For They Suck K * k, a first live DVD was released.

First LP with completely new material in 11 years

In 2017, Selfmedikasie was the first LP with exclusively new material since the release of Swanesang in 2006. Another EP followed in 2018 with Droom Hoog .
