Van Coke Kartel is a South African punk rock band.

Band history

The band was formed as a side project of the two musicians Francois "Van Coke" Badenhorst (vocals) and Wynand Myburgh (bass) from Fokofpolisiekar , supplemented by drummer Justin Kruger, who had already stood in for Fokofpolisiekar drummer Jaco Venter when he suffered an accident would have. Although Kruger was already an official member of the band at the time the debut album was released, all of the drum parts were recorded by session drummer Mike Horn. In contrast to Fokofpolisiekar, Van Coke also takes on the role of guitarist. As with Fokofpolisiekar, the texts are in Afrikaans .

The first self-titled album came out in November 2007 and was deliberately more straightforward than the then current, elaborately arranged Fokofpolisiekaralbum “Swanesang”. This changed somewhat with the successor Waaksaam en Wakker , published a year later, which was varied more with various guest contributions ( Hammond organ , accordion and cello ) and a ballad at the end. The running time of the two albums is about 30 and 35 minutes, respectively, shorter than the two Fokofpolisiekar albums that had been released up to then.

March 2010 followed with Skop, Skiet en Donner, the third album, which for the first time contains two English-language songs with two cover versions of well-known hits ( Maniac by Michael Sembello and Cocaine by J. J. Cale , made famous by Eric Clapton ). The album ends with three acoustic versions of the songs of the two predecessors, they are the only ones on which Justin Kruger plays the drums, on the other tracks Peach van Pletzen plays, who also worked as a producer and contributed other instruments and arrangements. Again there are guest contributions (including slide guitar and harmonica ) without the band completely deviating from its punk rock roots.

The band has so far performed in the South African provinces in which a significant part of the population speaks Afrikaans as their mother tongue ( Western and Eastern Cape , Free State and Gauteng ( Pretoria )). The albums were released on the Fokofpolisiekar label, Rhythm Records.

With aKing there is another band in which Fokofpolisiekar musicians (Hunter Kennedy and Jaco Venter) are involved, aKing singer and lead guitarist Laudo Liebenberg has a guest appearance on Skop, Skiet en Donner .
