The Vancouver Police Department ( VPD ) is the police service for the Canadian city of Vancouver . It is entrusted with the maintenance of law and order as well as the crime investigation in Vancouver. The British Columbia Police Act requires all communities with a population of 5,000 or more to maintain law and order. To do this, as in Vancouver, they can set up their own police department or delegate the task to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Much of the Vancouver metropolitan area is under the purview of the RCMP "E" Division.
The Vancouver Police Department has been headed since 2015 by Adam Palmer , who succeeded Jim Chu. The Vancouver Police Department is overseen by the Vancouver Police Board , chaired by Gregor Robertson ( Chair of the Vancouver Police Board ), who is also the mayor of the city. According to the 2016 annual report, the Vancouver Police Department has 1,716 personnel (1,327 police officers and 389 civilian employees) and has a budget of approximately C $ 265 million to carry out its duties .
Shortly after the city of Vancouver was founded, the previous night watchman John Stewart was appointed the city's first police chief on May 10, 1886. He became head of a police department that at that time consisted only of himself. The actual establishment of the Vancouver Police Department then took place on June 14, 1886, when the police force was increased to four officers. The reason for this was the great fire in Vancouver that destroyed large parts of the city on June 13th.
