The vandal war took place in the period from 533 to 534 in North Africa in the area of what is now Tunisia and Algeria between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Vandal Empire . It was the first of Justinian's wars to regain the former Roman territories of the fallen western empire and was crowned with rapid success. The Vandal Empire was conquered, bringing the former Roman province of Africa under Eastern Roman administration. The vandal forces under King Gelimer were decisively defeated in the Battle of Ad Decimum and the Battle of Tricamarum . The advantage for the numerically inferior Eastern Roman invasion army under Belisarius was that the vandals did not expect an attack and were thus surprised by the situation and that a fleet of 5,000 of the best Vandal warriors under the leadership of Gelimer's brother Tzazon had only recently been sent to Sardinia to put down a revolt there by Godas .
