Vanse Church

Vanse is a small town in the municipality of Farsund in Norway .

history

Vanse was the former community center of the Lista community, which was called Vanse until 1918. Historically, Vanse is mentioned in the following forms: 1801 Vansøe, 1865 Farsund and Vanse, 1900 Vanse. In 1965 the municipality of Vanse was merged with the municipalities of Herad, Spind and Farsund to form the municipality of Farsund.

The name Vanse probably comes from the word water (vannene). Vanse lies between three inland lakes (Prestvannet, Brastadvannet and Nesheimvannet). The other interpretation can be derived from the name Vanernes, a sanctuary. This also includes rainfalls caused by the gods of the genus Njord, Freyr and Freyja.

The church was originally built around 1000 in the pre-Gothic style.
