The Nikitin NW-1 ( Russian: Никитин НВ-1 ) was a small single-seat sports and training aircraft in a low- wing version, which was designed by the Soviet aircraft designer Vasily Nikitin , built in early 1933 and tested in September of the same year by the test pilot Valeri Tschkalow . The aim was to create a fast and agile aircraft with good-natured flight characteristics for the training of pilots . It should have properties that came close to a fighter plane.
history
The NW-1 was developed for use by OSSOAWIACHIM , the predecessor organization of the DOSAAF , and was Nikitin's first in-house design. During the test flights , it quickly became apparent that this aircraft had very poor flight characteristics and could only be controlled by experienced pilots. Chkalov is said to have made nine to twelve flights as part of the test. Based on the experiences made with this aircraft, the development was seen as purely experimental and further development as necessary. This further development was presented in 1935/1936 in a cantilever low-wing aircraft called the Nikitin NW-2 .
construction
The NW-1 was produced in composite construction and had a short, stocky fuselage in tubular steel construction with partial aluminum cladding. The outer wings, angled upwards from the middle, were wooden structures with fabric covering and braced towards the middle of the fuselage, in front of the open pilot's cabin. Additional struts were located below the wings. These led on both sides from the outside of the surfaces to the landing gear fairings and between the undercarriage from the inside of the fairings to the underside of the fuselage. The rigid "trouser leg" chassis had no shock absorption and was equipped with balloon tires . The aircraft was of a 110 hp rating engine of the type M-11 driven. The propeller was taken over by the U-2 . There was a resemblance to the Polikarpov I-16 . The fuselage was to be used again in a later development by Nikitin in 1939, in the NW-6 biplane .
