Vanth is an Etruscan demon . She often appears as the youthful companion of Charun , god of the dead , is usually winged and depicted with a torch, with which she shows the dead the way to the afterlife. Also snakes and less often a scroll or a key are among their attributes. Some of their wings are also shown with eyes. The meaning of Vanth could have been a relief (sweetening) of the transition from life to death.
