from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Waras-Tiroz B Bagratuni ( Armenian Վարազ-Տիրոց Բ Բագրատունի English: Varaztirots II Bagratuni ; around 590 - 645 or 646) was an Armenian Nacharar from the Bagratuni family , the son of Smbat IV Bagratuni (Սմբատ Դ Բագրատունի). He acted as Marzban of Armenia (~ 628), but then fled to the Byzantine Empire and was soon exiled to Africa for several years due to a participation in a plot against Emperor Herakleios . On his return around 645/6 he was made Kuropalates and Ishkhan Ishkhanats ′ of Armenia, but he died before he could be formally installed.

Life

Waras-Tiroz was the eldest son of Smbat IV. Bagratuni . Together with his brother Garikhpet he grew up in the Sassanid Empire at the court of Chosrau II (r. 591–628). After the suppression of the Vistahm rebellion , in which his father was significantly involved, Waras-Tiroz was appointed as royal cupbearer. Around this time or at the latest after Smbat's victory over the Hephthalites in 608, he was also given the honorary name Javitean Khosrow ("Eternal Chosrau").

In 628, Chosrau II was deposed by a plot of several noble families. Waras-Tiroz also took part. As a reward, the new Persian Shah , Kavadh II , appointed him " Marzban " of Armenia, with the rank of Aspet . However, he soon began to quarrel with the Persian governor of neighboring Azerbaijan and fled with his family to the Byzantine Emperor Herakleios , who resided with his court in north Mesopotamia after the end of the Byzantine – Sasanian War of 602–628 . According to the Armenian chroniclers Sebeos received Herakleios him with great honor, gave him gifts and wertvölle "elevated him above all the patricians of his realm" (exalted him above all the patricians of his kingdom). In 635 or 637, however, Waras-Tiroz was involved in a conspiracy by several Armenian magnates who wanted to depose and murder Herakleios and bring his son Johannes Athalaric to power. The conspiracy was exposed and Waras-Tiroz was exiled to Africa; the treatment he received was much more gracious than that given to his co-conspirators, it is said that because he voted against the killing of the emperor.

On his deathbed Herakleios pardoned Varaztrots in 641 and let his successor, Constantine III. , swear that he and his family will bring him back and restore his position. Waras-Tiroz was only brought back by Konstans II in 645/6 at the urging of Theodoros Rštuni . Waras-Tiroz soon fled from Constantinople to Armenia, but after an assurance of his loyalty Konstans appointed him governor of Armenia with the high rank of "Kuropalates". Before he could be formally used, however, he fell ill and died. He was buried next to his father in Dariwnk , Kogovit . Rštuni took his place.
