Vartan Malakian (born February 14, 1947 in Mosul ) is an Armenian - American artist .

Vartan Malakian is an Armenian Christian and began to artistically express the culture of his country as a child. When he was 10 or 11 years old, friends of his older sister bought his paintings. In 1968 Vartan became the choreographer of the Iraqi national dance group. Russian ballet experts helped him train the dancers. When Saddam Hussein came to power, he commissioned Malakian to design a revolutionary choreography, but since Malakian rejected Hussein's regime, he fled to Beirut in 1973 . There he found his great love Zepur, whom he then married. Sponsored by a church group, he and his wife moved to the United States. In 1975 their only child, Daron Malakian , was born. Vartan tried to support his family through poorly paid jobs, including a. he worked at a gas station. After saving enough money, he opened a small gallery in 1993 and started painting again. Malakian has already sold hundreds of his works, with many of the buyers being artists themselves. In 2001 his son was able to buy him a house thanks to the success of his band System of a Down , in which he is a guitarist. In 2005 Malakian painted the pictures for the covers of the two system-of-a-down albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize , as well as for the covers of the singles BYOB , Question , Hypnotize and Lonely Day .

" I want more to do artwork about beautiful things, about life ... how it's nice. We are not going to be born again. We have to live in peace and love each other. That's what I want to express in my new paintings. "

Vartan Malakian works with images, the shape of which changes when viewed from different angles. Faces in different, confused shapes can often be seen in the paintings.
