Vatnaöldur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vatnaöldur is the name of a series of craters in Iceland . It is located in the highlands of Iceland in the northwest of the Veiðivötn and northeast of Landmannalaugar in the municipality of Rangárþing ytra .

The series of craters was formed during a series of eruptions in the volcanic system of the Bárðarbunga around the year 870. These eruptions, like those of the neighboring Veiðivötn later, took place in about 65 km long volcanic fissures that were then in the area of a lake. In these mainly explosive eruptions, mainly tholeiite basalt was produced. The amount emitted was probably around 5–10 km³.
