Haraldur Sigurdsson

Haraldur Sigurðsson (born May 31, 1939 in Stykkishólmur ) is an Icelandic volcanologist and geochemist .

Life

Haraldur Sigurðsson studied geology and geochemistry in Great Britain , where he obtained a bachelor's degree from Queen's University of Belfast and a doctorate in 1970 from the University of Durham . He initially worked until 1974 on investigations and research assignments on the volcanoes of the Caribbean . Then he was appointed professor at the University of Rhode Island's Oceanographic Institute .

Research priorities

Haraldur Sigurðsson became particularly well known for his research into large volcanic eruptions in the past, such as B. that of Vesuvius from 79 AD in connection with the destruction of the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum .

In 1991 he discovered traces of a large meteorite impact on Haiti and was able to prove that they came from the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs .

In 2004 he discovered the city of Tambora in Indonesia , which had been buried under ashes during a huge explosive eruption of Mount Tambora volcano in 1815 .

In 1999 Haraldur Sigurdsson published an overview of the history of volcanology.

He is also the chief editor of the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes .
