Veiovis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Veiovis (also Vediovis ) was one of the many "little" gods of the Roman religion . He was probably originally the private god of the patrician Julier in Bovillae , who brought the cult to Rome after the destruction of Alba Longa . Little is known about Veiovis. His name means something like anti- Jupiter , which could mean a Jupiter of the underworld , but he was also associated with the young Jupiter or, because of his appearance, with Apollo . He had since March 7, 192 BC. An official temple between the two peaks of the Capitol Hill in Rome. His statue, which stood next to that of a little goat, had a beardless face and a bundle of arrows in its hand. It is believed that he was the god of atonement and the runaway criminals or healing.

His feasts were held on January 1st, March 7th, and May 21st, and goats were offered to him as sacrifices during the feasts .
