Vegetarian lard

As a vegetarian or vegetable wax , imitation of lard from vegetable fat called. Additional ingredients and spices give vegetarian lard a taste reminiscent of crackling lard and, like this, is used as a spread on bread and as part of hearty dishes.

Natural solid vegetable fats with a high proportion of saturated fatty acids (around 50–90%) such as palm oil and palm kernel oil , coconut fat or cocoa butter form the basis . In order to achieve a softer, “musky” consistency, the hot fat is mixed with a portion of vegetable oil. As with crackling lard, roasted onions , apple pieces and herbs such as marjoram as well as salt and pepper are also heated. The addition of yeast extract or seasoning is particularly common with industrially produced vegetarian lard . In some recipes, roasted and chopped nuts, sunflower seeds or the like are used as a substitute for greaves.

The term plant lard in older texts usually means unseasoned coconut or palm fat.
